VIENNESE WALTZ
The Viennese Waltz began in the 17th Century. It comes from Vienna, from the Alp region of Austria and also from the southern part of Germany that is called Bavaria. It was then danced with a lot of distance between the partners, almost like a Latin Hold. It slowly moved towards France and the French brought the partners closer together when dancing the Viennese Waltz (the hip joints actually touch). At that time, this change was quite scandalous. Later, in the 18th century, when it moved to America, the Americans felt that bringing the dance still closer would help them dance it better. In 1816, at the palace of the Prince Regent in London, the Viennese Waltz was performed for the first time in public. This close style of dance was heavily criticized by the public. In 1866, a popular English magazine ‘Belgravia’ criticized the Viennese Waltz, calling it a horrifying, wicked dance. Fortunately, Queen Victoria was a keen ballroom dancer and had a special place in her heart for the Viennese Waltz, which made it more acceptable to the public.
In 1924, when the Standard Ballroom Dance Association was formed, to make Viennese Waltz more popular they reduced its tempo and called it the ‘Waltz’ or the ‘ English Waltz’ or the ‘Modern Waltz’.
The Viennese Waltz has a speed of 60 beats per minute.
The Waltz, on the other hand, has a speed is 30 beats per minute.
Both the Viennese Waltz and the Waltz have a count of 1 2 3.
The mood of both these dances is – ‘ROMANCE’.

JIVE
Like the cha cha, the Jive has no country of origin. The mix of the Jive is similar to BOOGIE, JITTERBUG, WEST COAST SWING, LINDY HOP and most of all the ROCK ‘n’ ROLL… To dance the Jive effectively, one must be able to do a great mix of all… the Jive is a FUN FILLED… CARE FREE… and a RELAXED dance…
In 1954, The Latin American Ballroom Association mixed the all the above dances, and came up with the JIVE, keeping it either fast or slow depending upon the interpretation of music, style and choreography.
The Jive is one of the fastest of all the Latin American dances with a speed of 44 beats per minute. This dance, with all of its kicks and flicks, requires a tremendous amount of stamina.
Its count is 1 2 3A 4 5A 6.
The mood of Jive is – ‘FUN’

CHA CHA CHA

The Cha Cha Cha has no particular country of origin. It is an offshoot of this dance called the ‘Mambo’. When the Mambo was danced with a double leg movement people gave this dance the name ‘Triple Mambo’.
In 1954, the Latin American Ballroom Association accepted Triple Mambo as one of their dances by setting rules and regulations, and changing its name from Triple Mambo to CHA CHA CHA making it a FLIRTY… NAUGHTY… SPICY and a very RHYTHMICAL dance, filled with lots of zest, hip action and high speed maneuvers…. That’s why its music is very INVITING and MISCHIEVOUS … and it is called the CHEEKY Cha Cha Cha….
Cha Cha is a medium paced dance with a speed of 32 BPM.
Its count is 2 3cha cha 1.
The mood of Cha Cha is – ‘NAUGHTY’

FOXTROT

Harry Fox, an actor-comedian born in 1882, brought popularity to the Foxtrot. In 1904, Harry moved from San Francisco to New York after a massive fire and earthquake hit San Francisco. Harry chose to move to New York to fulfill his dream to act in plays. He had joined theater in 1902. He partnered up with Dolly, a singer and dancer from a band called Sisters, to dance to ragtime music in nightclubs for extra money. In 1914, cinema was becoming mainstream and theatre was beginning to fade. To draw people back to the theatres, the play directors asked Harry Fox and Dolly to dance between plays and during intermissions. One fine day, Harry Fox came up with a style that looked and sounded like a Horses Trot. People appreciated that step and copied it to dance it in public and gave it the name ‘Fox’s Trot’. That is where the name ‘Foxtrot’ came from.
In 1924, the Standard Ballroom Dance Association took the Foxtrot under their wing and set standards for it, making it even more popular.
Foxtrot is danced at the speed of 30 beats per minute.
It is counted in Slows and Quicks.
Its mood is – ‘SOCIAL’.

TANGO

The word ‘Tango’ is thought to be of African origin and denotes a ‘Meeting Place’ or ‘Special Place’. However, the Tango itself is not African in origin. The Tango actually comes from Argentina.
Passionate, sensual and tantalizing, the tango is many things to many people. In the 19th Century due to war and economic uncertainty, many Europeans were moving to South America to start new lives. By 1914, the Europeans had out numbered the natives of Argentina. There were also many more men in Buenos Aires than women. Fifty men for each woman. So, to get more women to dance with them, men started to hire café waitresses.
Soon, women started to dance only for money and not for the pleasure of dance. They would hold themselves back, grounding themselves so that it became difficult for the man to move them around the floor. That got the men angry, which is why the mood of the Tango is ‘Passionate yet Angry’. The knees bent position of the men that dance the Tango is because of the gaucho’s (cow boys’) boots that had hardened from excessive use. The lady would have her head turned away due to the excessive sweating of the man.
In 1924, a movie titled ‘The Four Horse Men’ starring Rudolph Valentino made people notice the Tango. In 1930, the Standard Ballroom Association accepted Tango as one of their official dances by making lots of changes in its style and calling it the ‘Modern Tango’.
They gave it a speed of 33 BPM.
It is counted in Slows and Quicks.
Keeping the mood the same – ‘Passionate yet Angry’.

Happy Feast of St. Lawrence sinquerim

Happy Feast of St. Lawrence

Wishing all of you and your family a happy feast of Saint Lawrence. May St. Lawrence bless and guide us forever.
The Original chapel of St. Lawrence at Sinquerim,  the forerunner of the present church was founded in 1630 by the then  viceroy Dom MInguel de Noronha, the fourth Count of Linhares. From its modest beginnings as an ermida(built either in 1630 or 1633), meant for a handful of poor fisher folk, it now became a Church.  In 1636 he granted it to the Franciscans a few weeks before leaving Goa at the end of his term. St. Lawrence Church was apart of the Aguada fortress, water reservoir and the lighthouse.  It stood as a silent witness to the ups and downs in the political, military and economic history of the Portuguese in India as well as the changing fortunes of Padroado Portuguese do Oriente, later it became a Rectorate of the Franciscans and remained so for about half a century, roughly from the early 1720 to late 1760, when the Franciscans had to quit Bardez and the Diocesan secular clergy took over. and eventually to the transition from Portuguese colonialism to liberation and reunion with India. The feast of this Church is celebrated on the 10th of August.
Fr. Alberto Germano Saldanha who was the parish priest of St. Lawrence Church from 1952 to 1991 invited the Capuchins in 1991 to take over the reins of the Church.  Fr. David Souza Filinto, OFM Cap was appointed as the first Capuchin Parish Priest of St. Lawrence Church. Now it has become a hub of many pastoral activities, and a community exists there.

Till me meet again..

Adieus Amigo

I had written the below while my friend Deepak was hospitalised,
Deepak bid goodbye to this world in the morning of 21st July

I knew you to be stronger,
But your health conditions made you sleep a little longer.
As you lie in bed with nothing in mind, the painful sight made me rewind.

All lost and lonely, I was a stranger in an unknown land.
And that’s when you lend me your caring hand.
Cannot spell the moment that brought us so close,
Yet when I opened the treasure box, I found too many memories to unfold.

From walking miles together to trekking lofty mountains,
Sailing in deep waters and para-sailing to the tunes of winds,
The bubble bath in magical springs, we were like puppets hung to the gushing waterfall strings.

From frolic and fun-parties and picnics
To saying goodbye forever to our dear ones,
Tears shed together and laughter that made our tummies pain
Everything stands still as we wait to see you back all lively again.

Hot Recheado bandgo on the Independence Day
Sweetness of the sugarcane juice on the roadway
And the mouth watering biryani in Kolaphur on our holiday,
All seems to have happened just yesterday.

How do we define You dear friend?
You were unique and an exclusive brand.
Wicked pranks, false ego
Witty humor and knew us at core.
Steamed Mackerals and red snapper barbeque
Oh what a cook you were.

From screaming songs at Tillari to celebrating birthdays at Sal,
The sparkling Caju feni at a local tavern
And the Chivas moments on the rocks of Marriot hotel,
You were always a priceless jewel.

Jungle drives late at nights,
Playing cards in candle lights,
Always up for naughty fights
You were a delight.

May it be Panalgad or Jyotibha,
Tillari or Tambdi Surla.
Or should I say Exotic India and Emerald Goa?
We had the best days with You because you were just what you are.

As you lay in bed with things unsaid,
We wish you to get well soon.
And come back to the crazy mad world where today we are left in tears and all sad.

Dear Lord, We cry in pain,
Please heal our friend who is silent in bed with no complaints
Touch him with your divine powers
And soak him with the healthy showers
Only to be with us again, all insane

When a total stranger becomes a part of your life - After death, memories are all I have

 The smile says it all

There are times in our life when we meet people who are not of any blood relations to you, yet just the smile on their face affirms to you that they are very warm and loving and though you don't meet these person every now and then, yet whenever you meet them they treat you with love and care which comes straight from their hearts.
One among such people in my life was Mrs.Rodrigues whom I used to affectionately call Mai (Mother). I have always know her as a person who was very loving towards her family, friends and neighbours. A ever-loving Mother, a friendly Mother-in-law and above all the best grandmother to her grandchildren.
I was just a family friend but whenever I visited her she would treat me as her own, always made me feel comfortable at home, even at times when I was not.
Once I had to stay over at their place and I had not carried spare shirt along with me. She went and brought for me a t-shirt of her son. I still remember the glee and radiance on her face the moment she saw me wearing the t-shirt of her Son, and what she said to me was was priceless.
As told by the family members she always looked forward to me visiting their home, but somehow times and circumstances never permitted me, though I just loved the warmnt and love I received from her on my every visit to the family.
She passed away suddenly of a hearth attack. It was sad, it was painful, but I know she is up there in Gods abode, she was my well wisher, a true one.
God Bless you Mai, I know you are up there in Heaven, May your soul rest in peace.Do keep me in your prayers.

If Roses Grow in Heaven

If roses grow in Heaven Lord
Please pick a bunch for me.
Place them in my Mai's arms
and tell her they're from me.
Tell her I love her and miss her,
and when she turns to smile,
Place a kiss upon her cheek
and hold her for a while.
Because remembering her is easy,
I do it everyday,
But there is an ache within my heart
That will never go away.

A visit to the Blessed Fr. Agnelo at Pilar

Blessed Fr. Agnelo at Pilar Goa
It was a unplanned visit, but every time I pass by Pilar I make it a point to visit the tomb of Fr. Agnelo at Pilar.
My day started with a early morning at the Church in Candolim for the 3rd Anniversary mass of my friends relations. After the church service was over, I joined the family for snacks at their home. I excused myself as I had to get to the railway station to met my friend who was coming from Bombay. On my way I met a nun who was proceeding to Mapusa and was waiting for the Bus. I volunteered to drive her to Panjim if she liked. she was very happy with the offer and as we drove towards Panjim she shared of her service to the congregation and taking care of young girls in the hostel and the challenges involved in handling young girls in changing times. As she gave me her blessings on arrival to panjim. I started my journey to Karmali. Having arrived at the Karmaili station, I was happy to know that the train was not much delayed and he would arrive. to pass off the time, I clicked a few photos of the blossomed May Tree.
On his arrival I learnt of the change in plans and instead of Panjim, he requested me to drop him to Pilar. Having shared a chit chat we soon arrived to his destination. There was a lady waiting to Go to Panjim. She asked if i could drop her to Panjim. So I had a Mom and her two kids accompanying me to Panjim, As this point in time i decided that I should visit the Tomb of Fr. Angelo. A quick halt at the Pilar monastry, I excused myself and went to offer prayers and seek strength and blessing from Blessed Fr. Agnelo, who is very dear to me.

Tuesday evening rains at Goa.

Rainy Tuesday Evening
This is one of t he many old houses, that still remain, constructed during the Portuguese rule in Goa. This building houses commercial establishments and residential house. To the left hand corner is the house where you can hear pleasant konkani and English music played. Its situated next to cafe central in Panjim and opposite Cafe Aaram (Remanso)
The Yellow and black painted rickshaw are a important mode of travel in the City of Panjim, as the city gets very busy during the Peak office hours.
