BarCamp Goa first edition was held on 30th October, 2011 at Theater 4, Bits Pilan Complex, Verna Goa.

This was the first edition of BarCamp that was held in Goa.

The first lecture of the day at BarCamp Goa “Perception vs Reality” was presented by Bijon Saha:

Bijon Saha stated “We see, what we want to see rather what our subconscious mind wants to see.”

He showed how illusions were created and the various theories of illusions and gave an explanation on each of those theories. Some of the illustration that were given included Charlie Chaplin illusion rotation, prospective images, Nobuyuki kayara dancer, voluntarily and non voluntarily change in direction, Hugo Zuccarelli holophonics among many others.

The second lecture of the day at BarCamp Goa “Supercharge your career with blogging” was presented by Mohit Pawar, Blogideas

Mohit says "Write and Blog for satisfaction" he spoke his journey to success in blogging. He showed the participants the various platforms that can be used to start blogging and the use of various applications. he also showed how just by sending an email you can post onto a blog just to show that you don’t have to be very techy to be a blogger. He also spoke on the mistakes that are committed by blogger and some of which were the mistakes that he himself did as a beginner. He stressed on CONSISTENT efforts by a blogger, keeping in TOUCH with the flowers of the blog, making post of 400 words and above and the most important PROMOTION of the blog.

The third lecture of the day at BarCamp Goa “EyeRIS” was presented by Bhupesh and Ashok of Cybermatics.

They displayed their product EYERIS it was a medium that was designed to handle multiple inputs on Windows 7. They also have a linux version of the same. It was an ideal and very helpful tool for the teacher as it would use multimedia to the max.Tthey took us on a virtual trekking of the Himalayas. They showed us the use of various google and Microsoft products like MS- Surface, MS-Collage, MS- Surface lagoon, Google sketchup. The device can be used to overcome the constraints of the teachers with physical disability. The EYERIS is a small device with a censor that is defines the points of any surface and makes it a total touch screen surface. You can used the internet, play videos, copy videos, edit pictures and even save the full lecture, there by making the sessions very lively and interactive. Beyond the teaching class. They showed us how it can be used in various professions like architects etc. But as Bhupesh says, this medium in no way is meant to replace the TEACHER but to assist them in teaching the students in a better way.

The fourth lecture of the day at BarCamp Goa “Green Building” was presented by Ms. Tallulah Dsilva, architect

Ms. Tallula spoke on green architecture. Landscaping should be livescaping. It should maintain the continouty of the landscapes. She spoke on the importance of green tops and green walls. She also gave examples of the living bridges that are constructed in some villages. She states concrete won’t last forever but structures made of wood and mud can last forever. She stressed on the use of traditional systems that have least impact on nature.

After the fourth lecture was followed by a lunch break

The Fifth lecture of the day at BarCamp Goa after the lunch break was taken Mr. Niju Mohan.

Niju Mohan was instrumental in organising the BarCamp in Goa. He spoke on how Bar Camp started and that it was an informal learning platform where one see a lot of likeminded people get together and share ideas and have a learning session.BarCamp is an ad-hoc unconference born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment.NO SPECTATORS, ONLY PARTICIPANTS. Attendees must give a demo, a session, or help with one, or otherwise volunteer / contribute in some way to support the event. All presentations are scheduled the day they happen. Prepare in advance, but come early to get a slot on the wall.There are no rules for a BarCamp. Presentations promoting specific commercial products or companies are discouraged.

The Sixth lecture of the day at BarCamp Goa was on Microfinance presented by Mr. Amrit Pal.

He stated that it was a entrepreneurship which was a non money making which in turn has a social standing. He spoke on the history of microcredit and how it started by Muhammad Yunus a Bangladeshi economist and founder of the Grameen Bank, an institution that provides microcredit (small loans to poor people possessing no collateral) to help its clients establish creditworthiness and financial self-sufficiency. He spoke on how the use of micro credit can help those that have no access to modern banking facilities. He also spoke on how using the mediums of mobiles text (sms) service could be used in microfinance that could help those in need. He also spoke on the drawbacks and failures linked to microfinance where organization that started as microfinance and nonprofit moved on to be big financial organization that started charging exorbitant rates of interests and started giving loans without proper scrutiny and then in turn resorted to unlawful ways in recovering the dues.

The seventh lecture of the day at BarCamp Goa “Playing with CSS”, was presented by Mr. Aniket Pant.

Aniket pant is a very young boy who took me by surprise, if not the entire class with his knowledge and expertise in CSS. He not only showed what CSS was all about but went a step forward and showed how CSS could be used to makes photos and logs that could replace the likes of Adobe. He then asked the participants to ask him to do something and when was told to make a dancing ball on the screen. He using CSS not only designed a ball on the screen but made it move and added text to it. He showed the movies that were made with CSS like "dreams in Rome". He made the use of CSS look so simple. He ended the class with a quote "Make things, Change them and Play with them"

The Eight lecture of the day at BarCamp Goa “Acting and Directing” was by Goan Director Mr. Milroy Goes.

Milroy shared his journey from being a salaried employee to making big in directing movies. He has directed many short film and documentaries and is working on a couple of movies ever since he did his first short film VENGEANCE (2007). Milroy shared how it was just a dream and no support from any of his close ones. It was only his brother that stood by him dream. Milroy along with his brother and a few of his college friends made the movie with all the available recourses like using his own house for the shoot. He states it was a “Zero Budget” film. He did shoot his movie and sent it to the Film Festival. His movie was not selected for screening. But that did not stop him he went on and did a number of film. He states he is still learning and when he looks back at his earlier films he knows that he could have done a lot more to improve them.

The Ninth letcture of the day at BarCamp Goa ”Novel Writing Month” was by writer Ms. Sonia Rao.

She spoke on NaNoWriMo. She spoke as to how from being a dentist, a stage actor and how she today is a well accomplished writer. She spoke on what led her towards being a writer. It was a way for erupting her inner lava of emotions and stories onto paper. As a writer she said "Bring out the message in you" as "Each one has a story to tell". She said everyone has a writer hidden in them and that they just need to be given a push to write. She also spoke on the Nation Novel Writing month.

The tenth lecture of the day at BarCamp Goa “Engineered governance Revolution” was delivered by Mr. Manuel Caldeira

Manuel Caldeira dedicated his lecture to the “Unknown Indian youth”. He spoke on Engineered Governance revolution/ Solution towards making a strong and respected India tomorrow. His lecture was indeed a great vision towards making India a better tomorrow which will be good for everybody.

The Eleventh Lecture of the day at BarCamp Goa, Creating positivity within "Attitude of Gratitude" was delivered by Mr. Amey Hegde

Corporate Trainer Amey Hegde spoke on "Attitude of gratitude". He spoke on the Zen Theory and how meditation was started in India (Dhyan) later spread to china (Chan) and went on to Japan (Zen). He stressed on the fact that "if one is grateful, one sleeps better, and wakes up better". He says "Gratitude was noticing good things in life". He had a interactive session wherein he first asked the participants to share the three things that god has blessed us with. Later he asked us to share one good thing that happened on that day in our life "for me it was my friend who helped in getting to Barcamp, as I had just arrived from the tour from North India the previous night and was very tired. I woke up late on 30th, started my bike and proceeded from Calangute towards Verna. The fuel in my bike was over mid way, there was a petrol shortage all over Goa. I had no money as I forgot to carry my wallet. I could not think of anyone other than my friend who had gone on a tour with me to Delhi. I called him up and apprised him of the problem, he was there in a matter of 10 minutes with fuel and money. That was the reason I managed to reach the Barcamp". He told the participants to write a Gratitude Diary for 21 days to develop an attitude of Gratitude which would bring a positive change in their lives.

The twelfth lecture of the day at BarCamp Goa was “Android toast” was presented by Mr. Prajyot Mainkar (CEO of SPM Softwares, BITSian and an android developer by profession.)

He spoke on the evolution of Android and the impact it has today on the world. Android was Danger before it was taken over by Google and it was called Android thereafter. It works on Open Handset alliance. Mandi Rubin, Mr.Rich miner and Larry page. He spoke on the latest of android i.e "Icecream sandwich android". He himself is a android application developer. He shared of the applications done by him as well as some of the android applications created by other android developers including the "just baked braille type" application that I found very innovative and very beneficial for the blind.

It was an amazing day spent at BarCamp Goa, It was indeed a learning experience.

She is the Youth Director of the Quebec Goan Association, and has recently been titled the Public Speaking Champion of Vanier College for the year 2011. Fiona’s subject was: “Abortion; A Crime against Humanity!” this first placing speech was presented as follows.

Abortion; A Crime against Humanity!

The most fundamental right in our Canadian Constitution is the right to life. How is it then that here in Quebec approximately 31,000 innocent human beings are put to death each year in one third of all hospitals and with the aid of the tax-payer’s money to fund these murders? These individuals have committed no crime. They are simply guilty of being and of being unwanted by a parent or relative. Statistics show that here in Quebec over 27% of all pregnancies end in abortion. Abortions are unnecessary because they are inhumane, avoidable, and numerous alternatives are available.

Firstly, abortions are inhumane because they go against the most fundamental right, which is the right to life. Our Quebec society likes to boast of its activities to protect the minorities and the vulnerable yet they strip the most innocent and defenceless from their right to live. Babies who are still inside their mothers’ womb are the most vulnerable since they have no voice and no protection. The abortion methods are extremely gruesome and cruel. Some methods involve injecting corrosive chemical compounds into the uterus so the infant suffers for approximately an hour before its death. Some methods involve the crushing of the babies’ bones or shredding of its body while it’s still alive, other methods involve the removal of the child’s brain with forceps to let its skull collapse. The corpse must be delivered immediately, and in many of the cases the women end up with permanently over stretched cervixes and suffer from depression. They are physically and mentally scarred, many commit suicide (which is also a crime) and studies prove that there is a positive correlation between abortions and increased risk for breast cancer. Today, we are outraged when baby seals are being hunted, we are shocked when products are tested on animals, yet we remain silent when we hear about abortions. We give more rights to animals, then the defenceless unborn babies, who have done nothing wrong to deserve such injustice. Many people like to comfort themselves by thinking that the foetus is not a human being since it is not alive, however in nearly all biology books it clearly states that all organisms that grow and develop are indeed alive and are capable of feeling pain. This means thousands of innocent live human babies are brutally murdered every month.

Secondly, most unplanned pregnancies can easily be avoided. Abstinence is the best way to avoid pregnancies; there are also many effective contraceptive methods easily available to everyone. Couples who unintentionally get pregnant should not have the right to murder their child. They should be prepared to nurture and care for their baby. Victims of rape or incest account for only 7% of all women who demand abortions. Even then these victims do not have the right to decide when and how a human child will die. These children could become great artists or scientists. What if I told you that Thomas Edison was a product of rape?

Lastly, unexpected or unwanted babies can be given up for adoption. Teen couples or rape victims who plan to pursue their education without having the burden of a child can let a family member take care of it until they are mature enough to care for their own child. In other cases the child can be given to a couple incapable of conceiving a child. Many infertile couples search far to adopt and would be overjoyed to take home a newborn baby. If babies are aborted then it would result in an aging population and there would be less people capable of taking care for the elderly. Replacing abortion by adoption could lower the population’s average age and bring joy to others.

In conclusion, abortion is the murder of defenceless human beings. Abortions are unnecessary because they are unethical, avoidable, and can be replaced by adoption. No one has the right to end the life of innocent new born babies, so do you think people should be given the right to murder the innocent children who are still inside their mothers’ womb? What if that child had a voice? And What if that child was you?

Several members of the Goan Diaspora spotted a glaring omission in the failure of the Goa Government to seek a World Heritage status for the Western Ghats in Goa. The state of Goa has been excluded in the application for World Heritage status being forwarded to UNESCO by the Indian government. There is an urgent need to send a petition urging the Government of Goa to take immediate steps to include Goa in the UNESCO nomination dossier.

My name is Mary Kay Graves Fry and my father, Dick Graves, from the United States was a great admirer and supporter of your St. Joseph's Home and School from 1971 until his death in 1990. He and Fr. Rego were very good friends and how that all began is a most interesting story. I was fortunate to accompany my mom and dad on three different trips to Goa during those years. Each time our reason for traveling halfway around the world was specifically to visit St. Joseph's.

My father would always bring sports and musical equipment for the boys and anything he was able to bring for Father Rego. He and my mom provided the funds for the chapel to be built, and my father made the stained glass windows of the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph for the chapel. He loved St. Joseph's.

Fishing Lovers of Ribandar organised their 11^th All-Goa fishing competition in memory of Bernardo Lobo on August 15, opposite Ajuda Church, bank of River Mandovi, Ribandar at 11.30 a.m.
It was great to see more that 50 participants from all age groups present at this unique event.

Smt. Vivina Nashnodkar, Corporator was the Chief Guest, Fr Alcandro Rodrigues, the parish priest of Ribandar was Guest of Honour, Shri. Moses Gonsalves and Shri. Mohan Coutinho were the special invitees for the event.

The winners, runners-up and third place winners were awarded with Rs 3,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 respectively along with awards and trophies

If you were around in the Goa of the 1960s, 1970s (and even a bit of the 1950s and 1980s), you couldn't possibly have missed the voice of

Imelda Dias Tavora. Author, radio-announcer of the yesteryears Imelda talks about her three books and her days in radio in Goa.

Poona-educated Imelda compares working in Goa and in Portugal, in the post-1961 era with the pre-1961. As she walks down those tumultous

years of the 1960s, Imelda is misty eyed when she thinks of her work, and recalls it with nostalgia. Today, radio is disappointing, says an

outspoken "Your's Truly" Imelda (that was her favourite sign-off phrase on Sunday afternoons and Friday nights, after the much awaited

Western music programmes). Everyone would remember her as the Your Favourites lady!

This is about the most bizarre thing to do while encountering a book: try to read it from the ending! That’s just what I did with the autobiography of someone you might know, a lady called Imelda Dias. So one is still trying to put the pieces of the jigsaw together; but it was an interesting read.

Most of Goa of a particular generation — those around here in the 1960s and 1970s — would probably remember the name “Imelda” (or even Imelda Tavora). She then was the most popular announcer in the State, at a time when radio was the unquestioned king of all the mass media. (Forget about TV, which didn’t exist here yet, and newspapers were far smaller.)

So I began reading her book with the Epilogue. This chapter took me to my schoolboy days in the 1970s, and the music that Imelda played for all of us via the radio. It came through loud and clear on Sunday afternoons. It came on Friday nights. It came in the afternoon siesta time on weekdays.

All the names of the programmes sounded so very fresh — ‘Your Choice’, ‘Latin Rhythm’, ‘Your Favourites’ and more. Many readers would probably even recall the sign-off name “Yours truly, Imelda”.

This book is about the Goa that was, touching a bit on colonial Goa and the period just after 1961. Those were times of change and uncertainty. But they were nice times too, in a way. Imelda’s book tells the story of the Catholic elite of the times, the nostalgia with which it looks back, and life in the “good old days”.

Subtitled “An Autobiography of a Woman Ahead of Her Times”, this is also a story of a woman going against the trend, settling for a divorce in the 1960s, and facing the patriarchy of Catholic Goa of the times.

It’s a book edited by Margaret Mascarenhas, editor of ‘Skin’. Spiced with the gossipy details of Panjim’s life in the 1970s, parts of the book are very engrossing. But one couldn’t believe all one read, even if this only incited one’s curiosity to learn more of those times.

Besides her boarding years in Pune (then still Poona), this story talks about life in All India Radio, what it meant to be a political refugee of sorts in Salazar’s Lisbon post-1961, and stories of love and romance from another era.

Dona Imelda is one of a fast disappearing breed of giants of Goa. Known as the voice of Goa’s radio Emissora de Goa, her voice was recognized in countries far away, like Mozambique, the Middle East and Portugal. She was appreciated in India and Goa too. That love for what she did carried across the airwaves directly into her listeners’ hearts.

I told him she probably looked like a rhino in real life. He said no, this voice cannot come from a rhino. He was right. Dona Imelda is beautiful even at this age, elegantly turned out with coiffed hair, pearls, arched eyebrows and a gentle smile. Plagued as she is by health problems, you know that this elegant woman comes from a different mould, a different time, when women were graceful, beautiful and strong. Words have been her calling since the beginning. Then, it was the spoken word, now it is the written word. Imelda has already written and published one book called Shattered Lives and a two-part autobiography – How Long Is Forever and its sequel To Love And Live Again. On May 10, Imelda Dias will release her third book Reminiscences of My Radio Days published by Third Millenium. The book is a fascinating first-hand account of the birth, survival and astounding success of Radio Goa re-christened Emissora de Goa. The station was received with delight not just in Goa and India, but in Africa and the Middle East too.

EASY TO READ DIFFICULT TO FORGET Dona Imelda’s latest book Pic: Bevinda Collaco Having just finished the slim volume Reminiscences of My Radio Days, I can say it is a must-have book for those in radio and indeed the wider field of entertainment and programming. It’s a must-have for those interested in the history of Goa, because Dona Imelda writes from the heart. She gives a valuable first-hand account of the turbulent times radio in Goa struggled through. It began with that first microphone in a coconut shell and a weak transmitter way back in May 20 1946, an exercise which gave birth to Radio Goa. Portugal, seeing the potential of Radio Goa added on more powerful transmitters and the baby grew into a giant – an interesting, fun and instructive giant that became of all things, hugely popular in India, outshining the boring and pedantic All India Radio. Radio Goa renamed Emissora de Goa was welcomed by the people of India who wanted international music along with Indian music, and clever programming for children and adults. The phenomenal success of Emissora de Goa had its own fallout with lots of letters written in newspapers all over the country about how the radio station was not good for India etc. However, as it turned out there were even more letters championing its cause and screaming encouragement. Rivetting samples of both are reproduced in this book. Then came the Liberation of Goa when the Indian army invaded the colony. The station was bombed; the staff had already been moved to Portugal. Even though she was given a good post by the Portuguese Radio in Lisbon, Dona Imelda returned to Goa with her children to protect her land and to be with her family. It helped that her job in the radio in Goa was offered back to her. “You take off from where you left off,” the Station Director told her. “Yes, Sir, I will do exactly that,” she replied. Little insights from Imelda tell one of the changed character of the radio in Goa, with the changed circumstances of Emissora de Goa renamed as All India Radio Panaji. Emissora de Goa was swallowed up by its competitor that had viewed its rising success with such suspicion. The original strong transmitters were taken away from Goa and sent to the northern borders of India since there was constant threat of war. Weak transmitters led to a reduction in the reach of the station. Listeners in India were incensed. The quality of programming suffered with the authorities frowning on all things Portuguese. Proponents of Marathi were trying to force Marathi on to the airwaves. This slim book is an invaluable documentation of the inside story of radio, not just in Goa but its impact in India and elsewhere. Publishers Third Millenium, also need to be congratulated on this book. Dona Imelda’s fan club was legend. The book even has a letter from a most avid fan – Remo Fernandes. Imelda’s move with the radio from Goa to Portugal and back to India has been written simply and clearly, without any flowery emotional excesses as could be forgiven in one who has been through such turbulent times. Her writing however is as elegant as the lady herself. She speaks with love of the warmth and encouragement she received during her short six month stint in Portugal. “From here in Emissora de Goa we were broadcasting to Africa, the Middle East and Europe. When I began broadcasting from Lisbon, people in Africa etc recognized my voice and asked how is it that the Goa lady announcer is heard here in Portugal? My colleagues said that I had come as an evacuee. And they replied, ‘So tell her that we listen to her’. You tell me,” said Dona Imelda with a glowing smile, “What more could you want out of life? That was the crowning glory of being in broadcasting.” She used to plan programmes, translate, read the news and also be the announcer and says she enjoyed every packed minute of it. She had taken an apartment close to the station and used to carry her work home with her. How did she manage as a mother of five? Her daughter Marianne smiled ruefully, “She was very strict with us.” I laughed. How strict could this gentle lady with the lilting voice be? “Oh everything was regimented,” she said. “I set fixed timings for meals, study and play. When they were naughty I would punish them by making them stand in a corner, or kneel down. They could not move away until I told them to.” Dona Imelda gifted me a copy of her new book Reminiscences of My Radio Days. I thought of my besotted relative and asked Imelda to write his name in it instead of mine, with her autograph. I know that is one devoted listener who will be very, very happy.

The Villagers of Calangute joined together on July 17^th, 2011 to celebrate their Twentieth Anniversary and the Feast of Patron St. Alex. The Social was held at Europa Convention Centre, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada and was well attended by well over 300 Villagers and guests.

The day began with Holy Mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. Joseph Rodrigues with the Villagers themselves making up the choir, under the leadership of Edlyn De Souza.

Following the Mass it was festival time with a mini-bazaar where numerous eats, spices, pickles etc. were on sale. The Band,Harmony and DJ Carlito with the famous Star Singer Cheryllyn Flower got the crowd to the dance floor.

The sit down dinner prepared by Portuguese Chefs included Pasteis de Bacalhau, Rissoes, Caldo Verde (Soup), Salads, Chicken, Roast Beef with Parisian Potatoes & Mixed vegetables, Rolls & Butter, Desserts & Coffeee /Tea.

The floor show included a Rumba performed by Bernard & Juliana Ribeiro

The President of the Calangute Association, Canada, Antonio Mascarenhas raised the toast and after the speech the Villagers sang the famous song “Uddon Guelem”.

Congratulations to the President, Antonio Mascarenhas and his Committee for doing an outstanding job. Everything went on smoothly and we all had a wonderful time. Charles De Souza was elected the President for 2012-2013.

I visited my school today as NGO Vision Education Society was holding a workshop. I always wanted to visit my school, but was never able to do so. Got a strange feeling as I entered the gate since I had not gone back to my school. To the right hand side of school gate was the chapel which was closed. Next to it, in the garden was the tomb of Rev. Fr. E. F. Rego, the Founder of the school. It had a beautiful inscription. So very true

"I have fought the good fight

I have finished the Race

I have kept the faith"

All that was left was one old school building the other one had been demolished and in its place 2 story building had been constructed. As I passed by the office, saw the familiar smiling face of the same office staff that was present while I was a student. On greeting him, asked for the direction to the office of the headmaster. Entered in and introduced myself to Brother Apoli D'Souza the headmaster and briefed him on the workshop. Bro. Apoli was kind enough to have given the permission and had kept the hall ready with all the arrangements to conduct the workshop.

The workshop started at 10.30 a.m with Mollie da Gama Silva conducting the workshop, Mr. Vijay Shetti Principal of Jhyan Vikas School graced the occasion in the presence of Brother Apoli. The response of the students at the workshop was excellent.

I was not able to meet any of my old teachers, but I did meet P.E teacher Sir. Anthony Lobo. He was very co-operative throughout the workshop. He remembered not only me but also my brother who was a student of the same school. Among the new teachers, I did see a few of my old teachers as they passed through the corridors from one class to another, they looked just the same as they were years ago.

After the workshop I strolled through the lush green playground, it was walking down the memory lane.I went looking for a statue of St. Joseph that used to be in the old building but could not find it. On inquiry with Sr. Anthony Lobo, learnt that it had moved to the chapel. Informed him that the chapel has been closed. He requested one of the students to open the chapel for me. I knelt down praying in the silence and in harmony with god. It was such a wonderful feeling just being there. I could visualize myself in the light blue shirt and dark blue shorts (my uniform) being seated in the chapel and Fr. Rego saying the holy mass.

I was very happy to know that my school has been excelling in every sphere from studies, extra curricular activities to sports.

I was extremely happy visiting my school and will be looking forward to visiting again, Although it wont be with a school bag and in uniform.

The workshop can be attended by anyone interested in the art and craft of making films. It provides a versatile set of tools which may be applied across short, feature, fiction and documentary formats and across multiple genres.

For the first-time filmmaker or film student, learning to think like a visual storyteller empowers you to write your own story, pick up a camera and go make a movie. Goa-based Ashvin Kumar, award-winning Indian writer-director is soon to conduct a filmmaking workshop titled 'Story to Screen'. The five-day workshop is an intense course on the art and craft of cinema, its history, aesthetics and language.

Ashvin believes that the essence of making a good film lies in creating an emotional connect with the audience which comes by creating a good story, well shot, performed and edited. 'Story to Screen' is not only for fresh aspirants but also for professionals. It provides versatile tools, which may be applied across a variety of film formats from home-movies to commercial films.

While certainly not the Bollywood type, Ashvin is the youngest Indian filmmaker to be nominated for an * Oscar. He began his career as an actor, then as director in theater and film editor. He is armed with a degree in Media and Communications from the University of London and started one of the first digital post-production studios in India. Presently, he runs his office and studio from Candolim although he frequently travels to the far corners of India and also overseas to shoot his films.

He draws inspiration from Chaplin, Hitchcock and Satyajit Ray for technique and films from China and Iran for their universality and storyline. Although he briefly attended the London , F i I m School, he

opted out and invested the rest of his course fees into his first film 'Road To Ladakh', which is described below. Going by his own experiences, he strongly believes in learning on-the-job and a self-taught process that is a life-long learning curve. He ventured into editing, producing, acting and directing plays and short films.

Ashvin's films cover a wide spectrum from fiction to feature documentaries, thrillers and films for children. They are as short as 15 minutes and as long as 86 minutes. His first film, was also his student Jilm called 'Road to Ladakh',

a 48 minute' featurette which he scripted and directed himself, starring Irfan Khan and Koel Purie. Making this film in the high altitude of Ladakh proved eventful and was a huge learning experience for Ashvin. It was later shown at Vancouver, Paris, Raindance and LA Shorts International film festivals.

His second film, 'Little Terrorist', became the first short film to get a theatrical release in India. Ashvin Kumar is the first Indian to be nominated at the European Film Academy and 'Little Terrorist' was selected for over 130 film festivals and won awards in 25 of them, including the British Academy of Film and Television Award (BAFTA).

Ashvin persuaded a foreign national crew, on the strength of his scripts, to fly from Europe to the Ladakh desert and to the Rajasthan desert on their own cost to help him make both these films for he was

still a student and short of funds. Several members of both those international crews have worked on his subsequent films.

His first feature film shot in the jungles of North India, The Forest' is a thrilling suspense-drama with an ecological message. It was premiered at Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose and soon after at Cannes Market in 2009. A trailer can be seen on www.theforestmovie.com

His most recent film, 'Inshallah, Football' is a feature documentary about a talented Kashmiri Muslim footballer and his angst with the Indian government's refusal to give him a passport to train with Pele's Club in Brazil. This film made it to the Pusan and won a special jury mention at the Dubai international film festival.

About the same time, Ashvin was invited by The Doon School, where he was a student, to make a film commemorating its 75'" Anniversary. The film 'Dazed in Doon' is a coming-of-age story of a schoolboy at the Doon and features a cast and crew of students who were trained on the job by Ashvin and worked at a professional level with an international crew.

Ashvin says that teaching school children film making was one of the best experiences of his life. He is presently working on a project that shall seek an original point of view on conflicts and childhood encouraging children to tell their own stories using the medium of cinema.

Ashvin Kumar is now prepared to set Goa on fire with his filmmaking course 'Story to Screen' which will be held from the 11th to the 15'" of August, at Art Chamber, Calangute. If this event is a success, he hopes to expand this into a regular activity, adding on courses in cinema appreciation and a practical short-filmmaking course. Goa, host to the International Film Festival of India, has just a couple of filmmakers who have made films. The San Jaoa celebrations at Siolim started at the cross with drum beats near to the San Jaoa Chapel at Siolim and later prayer at the San Jaoa Chapel which was followed by the floats boat parade at the Siolim Church with each boat leader putting up a crown on the cross and various other cultural programs on stage.

The day ended with live bands playing at the San Jaoa Chapel at Fernandes waddo.

INSPITE OS APPREHENSIONS OF STAGE AND SOUND GAVANA RENDERS A BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE at the opening of RADISSON BLU ...though short and sweet the harmony in voices and instrumentalization took the evening to greater heights.

Their choral rendition of GOA GOA GOA a composition by their Musical Director Fr. Tomas d"Aquino Sequeira, followed by the traditional mando ZONELAR BOISUN and the ever so popular DULPODS, which were sung as well as danced. The flawless rendition had many in the audience singing along and in raptures over the PANO BAJU OR BAS TODOP. The traditional and authentic mando attire [many of which are age old family heirlooms, safely stored in ancestral baus (camphor chests)].

As all good things must come to an end the cultural aspect of the evening closed with the stirring rendition of ADEUS KORCHO VELLU PAULO.

It was an amazing afternoon spent at Fernando's Nostalgia at Raia.

The Truly Authentic Goan Boutique Restaurant setup in the silent village Raia.

There was entertaining music by Saxy Aggie to start the World Music Day celebrations.

It was followed by the Friendly Brothers who gave wonderful music that got all the couples on the dance floor.

Tania and Andre performance was mesmerizing. The crowd danced all noon and late evening.

The crowd enjoyed dancing the Waltz/Foxtrot/Tangos...to TWIST/SHAKE/JIVE/ROCK n ROLL/LAMBADA/ ZUMBA/SALSA to finally our very true GOAN folk-dances..the traditional Kunnbi/Dekhni and ending with the ever so popular Portuguese Malhao and Corredinho. Margarida was in the midst of everything from welcoming the guest, to seeing that they are all well taken care of and when she took to the dance floor it was electrifying :-).

The best part was the buffet consisting of Goa Rice (Red), Goa Rice (white) and Bhasamati Rice, with 6 different varieties of pickles, fish para, salted mackerel salad, kismur dry prawns, Ambade koromb, Tissreo Sukhem, Sausage Salad, Pork Solantelem, Urad Methi Curry, Tendlim Caldinho, Samarachi Codhi, Soimerem tisreo. Macaroon hot chocolate and Orna Ghodshem.

It was indeed a afternoon to remember.
Congratulations to Margarida for hoisting yet another wonderful event at Nostalgia.

VENOMOUS SNAKES CONSERVATION PROGRAM
to be held on 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd of Aug 2011 (3 nights and 4 days)

Dear herp enthusiast/researcher,

Goa has a vast diversity of snakes of which a few are venomous and one needs to be aware of the same. They are an integral part of our urban as well as rural landscapes and a vital component of any healthy ecosystem. It is the need of the hour to create awareness in urban as well as rural Goa about identification and importance of these species in our environment.

Of course, there is no one specific simple single rule for identifying a venomous snake, as many non- venomous ones have evolved to look like their venomous brethren. However, some of the more medically important ones (yes that’s what they are termed as) can be recognized by their shape, size, color, behavior and sound they make when they are threatened in the field.

Our endeavor will be to document and map these venomous snakes in our environs and in the forests of Goa and compile a simple data sheet for identification of these species in the local language for the public.

We will also address issues of conflict that arise due to disturbance in habitat or loss of prey, both of which sadly are factors that are created by humans.

Join us to conduct opportunistic field surveys, night trails and transect searches in Goa’s wilderness while we attempt to achieve the above objectives.

We will interact with filed staff of the Forest department and snake rescuers, do fieldwork in remote locale and combine field science with local knowledge to help understand these highly ignored group of biodiversity.

This is an opportunity for those who seek to get training about the importance of venomous snakes and their ecology or an occasion to experience first hand the techniques of field data collection at the height of the South West Monsoons.

For photographers and wildlife trekkers, this is a chance to take their skills to the next level as photo documentation will be a key factor here and the opportunities will be endless!

Essentials

Essentials include keen interest to study herpetofauna and ability to work in a team in a given time frame. We will have to brave the South West monsoons and also spend a considerable amount of time in the field.

Dates:- 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd of Aug 2011 (3 nights and 4 days).

As per the press release from Most Rev. Bishop Frederick Henry, dated May 31, 2011, Rev. Joaquim (Jack) Pereira has just been appointed as the Vicar General for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, with immediate effect.

Father Jack has been serving the Diocese of Calgary for the past 23 years, in various capacities. He chaired the Diocesan Planning Commission, is a Member of the Presbyteral Council and served as a Delegate for the Diocese for the National Federation of Presbyteral Councils. He also served as a Pastor in three parishes of the Diocese. In 2003, he was instrumental in building a new church of the Holy Trinity Parish, Blairmore, Alberta, Canada, where he served for nine years.

Presently he is the Pastor of Holy Spirit Parish, one the largest parishes in the Diocese. Holy Spirit Parish is known to be one of the most vibrant parishes in the Diocese of Calgary.

Oldest of 7 children, Rev. Father Jack Pereira VG, was born in Majorda, Goa to Pedrinho Pereira and Maria Santana de Sa and educated in the Saligao and Rachol Seminaries, Goa, India.

The anxiously awaited day, May 8^th, finally dawned the release of the much-anticipated Konkani Album “Baby, You R My love”. The event was impressively brought in at Hotel Woodland, wherein several dignitaries graced the occasion to boost the release of the album; to name a few, the Guest of Honor, Hon. Minister of PWD, Churchill Alemao, Babu Kaudekar, Kedar Dhume, amongst others. The album’s release indeed marked another day in history for the distinctive creation of Goa’s new Konkani musical euphoria.

The album, recorded in Mumbai and Goa with India’s topmost legendary musical prodigies, the likes of Sudesh Bhosle, Sadhana Sargam and Goa’s very own Pop Sensation, Olavo Rodriguez (O’luv). The team, with their brilliant expertise, shelled out their best after sharing their ideas and suggestions towards the album’s melodious compositions.

Sudesh Bhosle, also the Chief Guest of the event, released the album, praising our very own Goa’s Pop sensation O’luv for being the most promising star of tomorrow with amazing potential and for his brilliant rendition of his title song with Sadhana Sargam, which he claimed was his favorite in the album. ‘Baby You R My Love’, is O’luv and Sadhana’s portrayal of a dreamy romance well depicted in the number.

The album also has a duet comic caper “Tension”, by the two phenomena’s themselves, Sudesh-Olavo, brilliantly executed, in their own distinct styles adding variations and exciting twists, making it a catchy and foot-tapping tune. “Tension” is also apparently the only Konkani rendition of the duo’s adaptations in four different languages, Konkani and English, sung by O’luv and Hindi and Marathi, by Sudesh.

The album also includes songs by singers Sharon, Deepika, Agostinho, Mini Mario and Elick. Another special attraction has been added to this album sung by O’luv, the much highlighted intersperse of O’luv playing the COMB with a piece of paper for a musical instrument, for the first time ever in a song in his entire career. The spirit and the attempt of these maestros to present to the listening audiences something out of the ordinary is definitely praiseworthy.
